- Upgrade To Paid Theme Questions
Unsal,
I have been building my site now for about 3 months, it’s not completely finished, but much closer. The response from visitors has been overwhelmingly positive.
At this point I am more interested in some styling aids and I am considering upgrading to the paid theme. I first want to make sure that switching to this will not negatively impact anything that I already on the site.
Would you be willing to evaluate my site to assure me that this will be a seamless transition?
Thank you, Matoca
It wont be a problem. Your theme settings will keep same. Only logos need to re-upload when switching theme but you dont have a logo
Still, its a software. There can always be a problem but i am here to answer.
Unsal,
I have firmasite base downloaded into WinRar on my desktop, unzipped. The readme doesn’t tell me how to install to the server. Can you give me a brief overview how to get this installed over the top of the current firmasite installation? I know how to upload files onto the server into directories.
Thanks, Matoca
you can simply upload it from the Themes -> Install Themes section in WordPress. To do this click on the Upload link at the top of the page.

Now, click the Choose File button, select the archive of your theme from your local computer and press theInstall Now button.

In few seconds, WordPress will upload and extract the theme archive for you. All you need to do next is to press the Activate link under the message for successful theme installation.

That’s it! You can now go to the front end of your site and see the newly activated theme.
(P.S: got from siteground.com )
Unsal,
Thank you! That was easier than I thought.
I just installed and activated the theme. The first thing I saw was that I lost all the menu items and the blue colored background so I quickly went back to the free theme for the meantime. There are a few visitors at the site and I don’t want them to get lost.
What do I need to keep note of when I switch themes so all my settings are kept? I don’t want to be reconstructing the menu for instance, that would be a real pain.
I did save (but didn’t apply) the Customize CSS that is under Appearance, but that has nothing to do with the menus, just a few things you gave me like getting rid of caption in the showcase, keep the showcase covering the background and at a min height of 350. I also have a few bbPress CSS rules.
Thanks, Matoca
Just re-assign menu to menu location? Other settings like custom css wont be changed.
3 things that can be lost in this theme switch tho: background image, logo and menu assign. Just re-assign them all.
Ok, I found that I had to recheck (in menus/dashboard) add Theme Locations to the main menu and didn’t have to recreate the menus. I had to add the color background hex into Appearance again and I had to reset the menu display to default. Some of the custom CSS I added to Customize, it’s still there but is being ignored. I set the CSS for forum stickies to a deep red/pink, now they are back to yellow.?
It seems like the some of the font sizes seem smaller than before? Especially the menu items.
And I need to remove the currency widget, can’t seem to find where that is added in the dashboard.
I like the permanent top menu on scroll.

.alert-danger
have to be .alert-warning
in your custom css.

Premium theme is more up to date. Maybe that style changed in latest updates. You can check http://bootswatch.com/cerulean/

Just remove it from widgets list.
Btw, i see only 1 forum published in http://www.secondchanceaihadogs.com/forums/
Unsal,
Thank you, I fixed all that you mentioned. I will think on the font size and decide if I really need to change it.
There are two private forums that require registration, one for moderators and the other for dog owners who have lost their dog and need private chats. The open forum doesn’t require registration, my choice. Eventually I will add the BuddyPress.
I am making educational videos and I am hoping that the content blocks will give me some options on how to display them. I have a test video on the Test page with two options for display so far, one embedded and the other a link to a full page. Neither are exactly what I want. The tabbed display may allow me to have multiple videos on one page. It’s all trial and error at this point.
Thank you, Matoca

If you explain error, i can help.
Thank you for asking, this is not really your difficulty. However, here is the sequence of how I am making and converting these videos. It is the problem of going from internet based flash videos played in flash players to a future of HTML5 and CSS3 embedded video.
1. I first create a MS Powerpoint presentation and add audio narration.
2. Using iSpring Pro which is a plugin to MS Powerpoint, I process the presentation as a .swf video that is packaged with an HTML file and a js script. This output works if I save these three files on the server under a folder called Video. I insert a link on the WP page. Clicking on that opens the presentation on a new page and plays it in the proprietary player. This is quite efficient and the output is easy to view. However this is not responsive nor is it viewable on mobile or tablet, which is my goal. I also would prefer all presentations be on one page if possible, in some kind of player.
3. I have tried to find a product to convert the .swf to a video file format that is compatible with HTML5. At that point I can use either an HTML5 player (perhaps one with that has the ability to have a playlist) within the page, or embed each video directly onto different pages.
4. I have only found one video converter that will actually handle a .swf. It screen captures the playback and converts it to an .avi. I converted the .avi to an .webm using firefogg plugin. Then I used a WP video plugin to play the .webm. This is the large embedded player on the test page. The presentation quality is unacceptably degraded, starting with the conversion from .swf to .avi, such that you can’t even read the words on the video. The free converter also loaded my computer with junk that had to be removed.
5. So I am still searching for a way to convert the presentation to an HTML5 format that will retain the quality of the presentation, as it exists in Powerpoint, and be viewable in mobil and tablet. Until I find this solution, I have not been producing more presentations. iSpring has an upgrade for Pro which makes an HTML5 output. Again, this is proprietary and is very expensive, not sure I want to spend that money. I have a professional who will narrate the presentations and until I resolve this issue I am not going to record the narrations.
6. If I can use the content blocks with a tabbed element I may be able to embed each video in a tab. That would solve the problem of how to display all videos on one page.
So it is not straightforward but I am hoping that the theme will help with the presentation once I get the other problems solved.

If you willing to pay some development cost (150$ fair?), i can try to help your problem.
You send me an example swf file to my mail (you can read it from http://firmasite.com/ ) and i will create a plugin that;
* creates a new content block for swf videos
* allows admin users to upload swf files (dont open to everyone for security reasons)
* automatically creates player with http://www.jwplayer.com/ which have a free player option.
* and yes, responsive
Unsal,
This is a good offer. However, let me ask you this, would this be easier for you if the videos were already in an HTML5 format? I am considering upgrading the iSpring converter so instead of a .swf output it would be an AVI/WMV/MPG/MP4 MP3/ WAV/WMA output. I think this may be a wise move for me to produce the final product in a modern video format. I would still need to place these into a player on a WP page and the presentation’s ease of use would be critical, so your help would be valuable.
my best, Matoca
Unsal,
Two reasons, one is that the narrator’s regular job’s contract is very specific about freelance work (even if this is donated time) and because of that I don’t want them to be shared publicly. I don’t like the ads and suggested videos that youtube adds to the player.
my best, Patrice
